What to Wear to a Graduation in Ireland
Some days deserve an outfit as considered as the moment itself. Graduation is one of them. Years of work, one walk across the stage, then photos on campus and a lunch that has a habit of turning into dinner. Graduate or proud Mom in the third row, you want to feel special, and you want to be comfortable until the last toast.
At Sinead Keary The Label, this is exactly the kind of day our occasion wear is made for. Tailored dresses, co-ords and separates that look right in the hall, hold up at the restaurant and earn their place in your wardrobe for years after.
Below, discover what to wear to a graduation as the graduate, as a guest, and for an Autumn Winter conferring in Ireland.

Graduation Outfits for Women in Ireland
A graduation in Ireland calls for smart occasion wear: a tailored dress, a jacket and skirt co-ord, or a blazer with satin trousers. Sinead Keary dresses both the graduate and her family, with pieces that sit neatly under a gown and hold their shape through a full day.

►
The dress code: Smart, occasion ready, a notch more relaxed than a wedding. Most Irish universities don’t set a formal dress code at all.
-
►
For the graduate: Neat neckline, slim sleeve, and trousers or a midi so something shows below the gown. Our Becky Silk Cami in Plum with our bestselling Sandra Satin Trousers in Plum makes a full tonal look.
-
►
For mams and guests: No gown to cover it, so this is your chance to dress up. Mams love the Lily Cashmere Bow Back Sweater with Sandra Satin Trousers, the Lucy Jacket and Skirt, or a Sarah Wrap Blazer, with the Jessica Longline Wool Coat on top.
-
►
Colours: Every colour is welcome at a graduation, including cream and white. Navy, plum and black photograph especially well.
-
►
For an Autumn Winter conferring: Bring a layer you are happy to be photographed in. The Jessica Longline Wool Coat covers everything on a cold day, while the Aisling Blazer in Navy Pinstripe or a Sarah or Lydia Wrap Blazer works once you’re indoors.

What should women wear to a graduation in Ireland?

Most women in Ireland wear smart occasion wear to a graduation: a tailored dress, a jacket and skirt co-ord, or a blazer with trousers. Pitch it a step up from the office and a step down from a wedding. At Sinead Keary The Label, our Occasion Wear Edit sits right at that level, from the Aurora Short Sleeve Dress in Plum to the Aisling Blazer worn over our Sandra Satin Trousers.
Nearly every graduation outfit we see falls into one of three camps:
- The dress: A structured dress such as the Aurora Short Sleeve Dress in Plum. It’s fully lined, double-breasted and has proper statement puff sleeves.
- The co-ord: A matching jacket and skirt, such as the Lucy Jacket and Lucy Skirt. Two pieces, no decisions.
- The separates: Satin trousers, a silk cami and a tailored blazer. This is the one you’ll get the most wear out of afterwards.
Most conferrings are daytime affairs: ceremony, photos outside, then a meal with the family. Plan your shoes around the walking. Campuses are always bigger than you remember, and those cobbles are unforgiving, so we’d go for a block heel, a low heel or a smart flat.
What should you wear under a graduation gown?
Under a graduation gown, a neat neckline, a slim sleeve and a hemline that shows below the gown work best, as the gown covers your arms and the hood sits across your shoulders. Our Becky Silk Cami and Sandra Satin Trousers from Sinead Keary sit flat under the gown and look every bit as good once it is handed back.
In the ceremony photos, only three things show: neckline, hem and shoes. A V or scoop neck frames your face and gives the hood room to sit.
Gown lengths vary wildly, so trousers or a midi are the safe bet if you want anything to show below it. Our Sandra Satin Trousers come in a classic length for flats and a fuller length for heels. Decide on the shoes first, then pick the length.
Statement sleeves get crushed under a gown, so save them for later. The Aurora Short Sleeve Dress, with its full puff sleeves, is really one for the guests.
Once the gown goes back, a blazer earns its keep. Throw the Aisling Blazer over your cami, and the same outfit goes straight on to dinner.
What should a mom or guest wear to a graduation?

A mother or guest at a graduation usually wears smart daytime occasion wear, with a jacket or coat for the photographs outside. For mams, the Sinead Keary pieces we reach for are the Lily Cashmere Bow Back Sweater with Sandra Satin Trousers, the much-loved Lucy Jacket and Skirt, and the Sarah Wrap Blazer, finished with the Jessica Longline Wool Coat.
With no gown to work around, mams can go for colour and texture. Our favourite is the Lily Cashmere Bow Back Sweater in Plum with Sandra Satin Trousers in the same shade. It’s soft and warm for a long day, polished in every photo, and the satin bow at the back gets noticed when you turn for the family shot.
A co-ord takes the thinking out of it. The Lucy Jacket and Lucy Skirt in Navy look smart and feminine, and the jacket works just as well with jeans the following weekend. If you’d rather tailoring, the Sarah Wrap Blazer in Plum, Black or Cream ties at the waist and sits neatly over the Sandra. Put the Jessica Longline Wool Coat over either one for the photos outside; it’s 100% wool and comes in Plum, Cream and Khaki.
For something softer, our Molly Boucle Jacket in Cream, thrown over a navy or black dress, adds texture and puts a lighter colour near your face. Cameras love that.
What colours are best for a graduation outfit?

Every colour is welcome at a graduation, cream and white included, because no colour is reserved for anyone on the day. Navy, plum, black and cream photograph particularly well, and you will find all four across our current collection at Sinead Keary The Label.
If you are graduating, focus on the colour at your neckline, since that is what sits against the black of the gown. Plum or cream under the hood lifts your face in every shot.
For mams and guests, plum and navy feel rich without tipping into formal. Cream works beautifully too. The Lucy Jacket in Cream with the matching Lucy Skirt stands out in the family photo and is more than smart enough for dinner.
What should you wear to an autumn or winter graduation in Ireland?
For an autumn or winter graduation in Ireland, wear something tailored with a proper warm layer on top, since most of the photos happen outdoors. At Sinead Keary The Label, our Aisling Blazer is heavily interlined, so it keeps its shape over a cami or dress, and the Jessica Longline Wool Coat covers a dress fully when the wind picks up.
Plenty of Irish universities confer in autumn and winter as well as summer, which means the weather gets a vote. Pick a blazer or coat you’re happy to be photographed in, because chances are it’s staying on.
The Aisling Blazer has a relaxed, slightly oversized boyfriend fit, so there’s room for a fine knit or a silk cami underneath. Take your usual size for that easy shape, or go down one for something neater. On properly cold days, our Jessica Longline Wool Coat in Plum goes over a dress or trouser co-ord and keeps everything tailored.
If the conferring runs into dinner, swap the blazer for the Jennifer Velvet Jacket in Black. Puff shoulders and diamanté trim make it feel like an occasion, and it sits just as easily over satin trousers as over a simple dress. The matching Jennifer Velvet Skirt turns it into a co-ord.
Can you wear trousers to a graduation?
Yes, and trousers are one of the most practical and polished choices for a graduation, for both graduates and guests. Our bestselling Sandra Satin Trousers from Sinead Keary come in a classic length for flats and a fuller length for heels, and the Aurora Jacket and Trouser in Midnight Navy make a polished co-ord for the day.
They are easier on the steps up to the stage, warmer for the photos outside, and they actually show beneath the gown. If you would rather a suit than a dress, the Aurora Jacket and Aurora Trouser in Midnight Navy are made as a pair. Pop a cami underneath in case the jacket comes off at dinner.
For something newer, the Lydia Wrap Blazer and Sandra Satin Trousers in Evergreen from Lydia Millen Chapter Three make a tonal suit that photographs beautifully against a black gown. The wide lapels and tie belt look polished at the ceremony, and the Sandra comes in a classic length for flats or a fuller length for heels.
Graduation outfits designed to be worn again
The best graduation outfit is the one you’re still wearing next spring. Sinead Keary The Label was built on capsule dressing, so it all restyles easily: the Aisling Blazer with denim on a Saturday, the Sandra Satin Trousers for the office, the Lucy Jacket and Skirt together or apart.

Sinead started the label after 12 years in personal styling and luxury retail, dressing women with full wardrobes and nothing to wear. That is why a graduation outfit bought in October should see you through a Christmas party in December and a christening in spring.

Trinity has two rounds, 19 to 29 October and 19 to 27 November, while TU Dublin graduates are in Tallaght from 27 to 31 October. UCD saves its winter conferring for 30 November to 4 December. Down in Cork, UCC’s autumn conferrings run from 16 October to 6 November, and if you’re heading west, University of Galway’s Winter Conferring runs 18 to 24 November.
